The 401(k) analog for public-school, nonprofit, and some healthcare workers.
Why it matters
Same contribution limits as a 401(k). Investment menus tend to be worse (annuity-heavy) so scrutinize expense ratios carefully. A 15-year service catch-up exists for long-tenured employees at eligible employers.
