CPI (Consumer Price Index)

The most commonly cited measure of inflation, tracked by the Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Why it matters

CPI measures the price change of a basket of goods and services urban consumers buy. It's used to index Social Security, tax brackets, and inflation-protected securities.
