Wage garnishment
A court order that requires an employer to withhold part of your paycheck to pay a debt.
Why it matters
Federal law caps garnishment at 25% of disposable income (higher for child support, student loans, and taxes). Some states impose lower caps. Garnishment usually requires a judgment first — except for federal debts, which can be administrative.
