Marginal tax rate

The rate on your NEXT dollar of income — not on your whole income.

Why it matters

US federal rates in 2025 for single filers: 10%, 12%, 22%, 24%, 32%, 35%, 37%. Being "in the 22% bracket" means the top slice of your income is taxed at 22%; earlier slices are taxed at lower rates.
