A pooled investment fund priced once daily at market close.
Why it matters
Mutual funds can be actively managed or index-tracking. In taxable accounts, funds distribute annual capital gains that ETFs generally avoid. Inside retirement accounts, mutual funds and ETFs are effectively equivalent.
